What Metal?
This generation is bullshit. I'm sorry, but you are seriously beginning to suck. In theory this was supposed to be the "label free" generation, but for some reason you all seem to think that everything needs to be labeled and categorized. You need to have a word or a term for everything, and think that every little tweak or twist requires an entirely new label so as to differentiate it from everything else.

Take, as an example, the various "sub genres" of the music collectively known as "Metal". When I was a kid, we had "Heavy Metal". Simple. We did also have "Hard Rock" and we sometimes referred to some music as "Guitar Rock", but that's as far as it went.

Today I was checking out a band, on a friend's recommendation, and found that they are supposedly best described as "Female-Fronted Symphonic Power Metal". Smelling some bullshit, and remembering some recently-tossed-about terms like "Nu Metal" and "Black Metal", I checked on Wikipedia and discovered the following:

Avant-garde metal
Black metal
Death metal
Doom metal
Glam metal
Gothic metal
Groove metal
Power metal
Speed metal
Stoner metal
Symphonic metal
Thrash metal
Traditional heavy metal
Viking metal
Alternative metal
Christian metal
Crust punk
Folk metal
Funk metal
Grindcore
Grunge
Industrial metal
Metalcore
Neo-classical metal
Nu metal
Post-metal
Progressive metal
Rap metal
Sludge metal

Are you people insane!?! What the fuck is wrong with you? Are you people so insecure with yourselves and who you are that you need to create all these fucking terms and "types" so that you and your pathetic group of friends can better relate to each other and other, equally pathetic people? Does this crazy collection of labels really help you put the world into perspective and make you happy?

Who sits around all day having conversations like this...

"Hmm, you know, Billy, this isn't quite Black Metal is it?"

"No, Bob, but it's not really Gothic Metal, either."

"You're right. I was thinking Gothic Metal, but then I was like, no, it's not quite gothic enough."

"I think, I think it's Doom Metal."

"Yes! That's it! It's Doom Metal. You nailed it, man!" [high fives all around]

"Whew! Glad we figured that one out. My world was dangerously close to spiraling out of control because I'm too simple-minded to just dig the music without it being rigorously categorized and classified!"

Fuck you. Just enjoy the shit and stop being so fucking hung up on all this "identity" bullshit. Back in the day, we used to be able to listen to all kinds of different music and never once did we have to plop ourselves into the middle of some kind of "sub-culture" to enjoy it. I never felt the need to put my music into rigid categories, and/or make up new bullshit categories in order to make myself feel better about what I was listening to, and neither should you.

Listen to it, enjoy it, expose your friends to it, have a good time. Stop trying to stick a fucking tag on anything that sits still for two seconds.

Are you referring to my non-alphabetic listing, or something else? :)

Aw maaaaaan :)
The whole post, especially the last paragraph and the last line.
When I was a yoot there there was either house (for dancin') or there was techno (for dancin' and druggin') over here... now look what happened!

Ah ha! Sorry, I'm just a little out of it today. Didn't mean to spoil it. ;)

Yeah, I was made peripherally aware of the "techno problem" a few years ago when someone pointed out the bazillion fucking sub-genres of what we used to be content to call "industrial". At the time I pretty much just rolled my eyes, went "whatever", and moved on.

I see now that I never should have done that. I should have had this Zarathustra Moment(tm) years ago. A sermon back then might have had a chance to put things right, but now I fear it's far too late.

P.S. You had "house"? In my day, we just had "techno". :)

Oh Yeah. House.
Even then it was almost an umbrealla term in itself, covering a few different genres. Before the acid driven summers of love of 1988&9 there was "Club" which was more like just a 4/4 kickdrum put to anything (think "Pump up the Volume" or some of that Stock Aitken Waterman shite for the idea). That stuff came in from Europe, long before Detroit started which also means years before 808 state copied Detroit to England.

Since 1988/9 house encompassed all of that and anything else that wasn't techno (by techno I mean harder sound overall, stricter beats and tighter design). I mean there was even rappin' thrown in there and all, all the wacky shit too. House was friendlier, more laid back, limitless and tongue in cheek... it'd make you smile kinda thing. It's like house is from the heart and techno is from the dick.

Around 1990 Ghent, Utrecht and Rotterdam began to export but it wasn't until 1992 that the techno section in the record shops grew a twin called "Euro" to cover that side of it. Other sections like "Hardcore" started to appear, but thankfully "Club" was long long gone.

I'd really better stop here, or I'll have an essay on my hands...

The same can be said of gender, sexual identity, and sexual orientation/preference labels. On the simplest terms you have male, female, straight, gay/lesbian, bisexual. Now they have cisgender, transgender, pansexual, omnisexual, asexual, all-gendered, etc. etc. etc. And then people who don't have "easy" identities get all uppity at those of us in the community who have relatively "normal" identities. I'm a bisexual, cisgendered (born female sexed and ok with it) woman. Obviously my opinions on transgendered or pansexual or whathaveyou are not valid or welcomed.

Yes I am bitter. [info]postqueer made me this way.

Yeah, see supposedly this here next generation was supposed to make all that kind of shit go away. "Awww...we're all just one big happy family! We don't need labels! We don't see 'color'! We can just be ourselves!"

It's all bullshit. I don't know, maybe I just happened to fall in with a group of people that, you know, actually accepted their friends for who they were. And accepted their likes and dislikes without dwelling on them or classifying them. This shit just seems so fucking unnecessary. Potentially dangerous.

Call me crazy, but I've always said that people that needed fucking labels were adding to the problem as much as the homophobes. When will we have equality? When everyone stops giving a shit, including the "activists". And I was saying this shit when all we had was straight, gay, bi and transgendered. I don't even want to know what half that shit is you wrote up there. Are they seriously getting that fucked up?

Sigh. Oh well, I missed the fucking boat on this one I guess. I actually had to figure out who I was when I was a kid. I missed out on being able to pick my identity off of a fucking flow-chart.
